about

Do You Hear Me?

Latest album from Batch Gueye. 2020. Batch Gueye's first afrobeat album.

Do you hear me asks you “Did you learn anything or take something from my songs since 2010?” Since Batch was 7 years old, if he wanted his grandmother to tell him a history, he had to fight with other children to buy her bitta cola just to hear her history. The history she was telling the children is the one Batch is telling you in this album “Do you hear me?” and connected to all his previous albums. So tell me, do you hear me? If you here me, be there for me and I will be there for you.

This album called “Do you hear me?” is about

You do you – Don’t let anyone make you do something that you don’t like or make you do something that is not you.

Nder O –We use this West African, Senegalese drum for talking to each other and to call everyone to the “Penc” to discuss, to celebrate and to story-tell.

You cannot have it all – The one who is rich looks like they have it all. But the one who thinks they don’t have enough should be proud with what they have.

Like you – Sometimes you have someone next to you giving so much love to you. But when you are far away I realise I never met someone like you.

Thioung – I was playing with my friends doing a Thioung drum class. The sound just came. It was so enjoyable with my friends. I told them I will do a song for it. It’s a happy song.

Be real – It doesn’t matter how long a lie has been hiding, just know the truth always comes out. Be yourself.

Don’t forget who you are – Don’t ever forget where you are coming from, the tradition you have and the history behind you.

My friend- Sometimes power and drama can destroy friendship. But please remember don’t get jealous by what I have and what I can do. Be there for me, I’ll be there for you, my friend.

Mbathio – It is about my sister who passed away. She is so close to me and taught me so much in life about what we need and what we don’t need. If I was upset, she was the only one who could call me, calm me down and make me see the truth. God bless her.

Why do you need proof? – Why do you need me to prove how much I love you? Why can you not see that I am always there for you?

I am in love – I was thinking I will never love again. I feel arrested, stuck and scared because I love again. She is the true woman, she is beautiful, she looks wow, when she speaks it feels like I am listening to the best sound in the world, when she smiles I feel like I am in heaven.
